Crybaby Reviews
Wrong Mog – 16th August 2012
Daniel Johnston’s True Love Will Find You in the End is a devastatingly simple, two-minute declaration of hope that often sounds like it’s trying to convince itself that everything’s going to be OK. While the title makes a bold statement, the lyrics undermine it slightly: “this is a promise with a catch, only if you’re looking can it find you”. It also lends itself to being reinterpreted given that the original is so sparse; just Johnston and his guitar. When Beck covered it in 2004 for the Johnston tribute album, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered, he transformed into a harmonica-laced country lament, while this new, more hopeful version by Bristol-based Crybaby, aka Danny Coughlan, quickens the pace and fleshes out the musical backing to include a spidery guitar solo and distant handclaps. His interpretation is taken from the forthcoming We’re Supposed to Be in Love EP, whose title track is the third single to be taken from the acclaimed self-titled debut album and also includes a version of Gloomy Sunday, a song from 1933 made famous by Billie Holiday. – Michael Cragg
