Jack Hues & The Quartet Reviews
The Independent – 6th July 2008
Pick of the Album: ‘Tokyo Angelic’
Not so long ago you’d have got long odds on the return to the early Seventies’ “Canterbury Sound”. Well, joyous news, it’s back – kind of – in the form of a suite by The-Quartet, an augmented combo of decidedly Kentish vibe.
What this means is that they play music which hybridises the elements of rock and jazz in a palpably English way, with lots of interesting harmony stretched over an attenuated structural frame, and hints of “story”. There are no vocals (not even in “The Chav’s Tale”) but that only lends mystery to events. Alternative group name: Tonbridge & the South. Gently recommended. – Nick Coleman
